  • Abstract/Forward by Author:

Sociology is the study of human social life. Human social life is complex and encompasses many facets of the human experience. Because of the complexity, the discipline of sociology subdivided over time into specialty areas. The first section of this book covers the foundations of sociology, including an introduction to the discipline, the methods of study, and some of the dominant theoretical perspectives. The remaining chapters focus on the different areas of study in sociology.

Latest Updates

Elmer Talks: Latest Blog Entries: May 2008

While I haven’t updated the blog in the past three months, I have been able to secure other resources and volunteers to help develop Elmer. Listed below are a couple of the latest and greatest Elmer updates.

CODA Project: Since the end of January, I have added 74 more definitions to the dictionary with about 260 which still remain incomplete.

Pages describing the type of content and guidelines for submission have been initiated. Hopefully they will be done by the end of May.

By mid-June we intend to have the first “How To” pages up and running to help contributors and readers alike.

LOGOS Project: Elmer’s French and Spanish web sites are still under construction and while they were up and running by the end of March they will likely not be fully translated until August-December 2008. This progress is in great part due to the inclusion of new translators to the project.

Elmer is currently trying to secure a Mandarin translator for the site to help us with an initial translation of the terms, as opposed to the entire set of articles. This first step will help us expand the use of the dictionary to include more people and help English, Spanish, and French speakers learn the equivalence to terms in Mandarin.

If anyone is interested in translating Elmer into another language, please contact us or visit this page.

BIBLIOS Project: We have our first eClass thanks to Ryan T. Cragun, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Tampa which has graciouly allowed us to link up to his Introduction to Sociology. His work is being developed at wiki-books and once it is completed, we will hopefully have a finished PDF of his work to share with all of you.

POYEN Project: We are still looking for a web developer to help us design and implement the social networking component to Elmer. A final design is now complete and being sent to a group of volunteers that may help us develop this section during the upcoming summer.
